How fit do I need to be?+
The GR221 Experience is a firm but achievable long-weekend walk. On the 3-day Hiker pace you'll walk around 14, 10 and 30 km, with the Valldemossa–Deià–Sóller day as the sting — nearly 950 m of climbing and technical rocky descents. Fine for anyone comfortable with a full day on the hill; the 4-day Explorer pace breaks the long final day at Deià and gives more time to enjoy the villages.
When should I walk it?+
March to May and October are the best months — manageable temperatures, water in the springs and clear light on the ridgelines. February and November can work depending on the year. Avoid June to August: the Tramuntana gets very hot and exposed, and the long climbs above Deià become genuinely punishing.
How do I get to Estellencs and home from Sóller?+
Palma airport has cheap direct flights from most of the UK and northern Europe. From the airport, the L102 bus runs to Estellencs (roughly 1h30) via Andratx; a taxi is around €60. From Sóller, the vintage narrow-gauge train to Palma is the classic way home — one of the great short train journeys in Europe — with connecting airport buses at the other end.
Do you include luggage transfer?+
Yes, every day. Your main bag moves between accommodation each morning with a 20 kg allowance; you walk with a daypack containing water, lunch, waterproofs and sun layers. The whole Experience runs between road-accessible villages, so bag transfer works on every stage.
What kind of accommodation do you book?+
A mix of small family-run village hotels, restored fincas and traditional pensions — the sort of places locals stay. Estellencs and Banyalbufar have limited options (we book early); Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller offer wider choice, including some boutique options if you want to upgrade. Refuge nights aren't required on the Experience.
What's the realistic total cost?+
The 3-day Hiker package starts from €147 per person — accommodation with breakfast, daily luggage transfer, planning, route notes and our support line while you walk. On top, budget €12–18 for a set-menu lunch and €25–35 for dinner. Most walkers spend an additional €200–350 across the weekend on food, drinks and the vintage train from Sóller.
Is this a self-guided GR221 Experience walking holiday?+
Yes. Every GR221 Experience trip we run is self-guided: you walk the route on your own, at your own pace, with no group and no guide. We do the planning and the logistics — an itinerary of 2 – 4 days built around the pace you choose, accommodation booked in your name along the 53 km route, your main bag moved between stays each day, GPX files and route notes for every stage, and a real person on the end of the phone while you're out there. You choose your own start date; there are no fixed departures.
What's the difference between a self-guided and a guided GR221 Experience trip?+
On a guided trip you walk with a leader and a group to a fixed schedule. Self-guided means the day is yours: start when you like, stop for lunch where you like, walk fast or slowly, take a rest day. The route is waymarked and you navigate with the GPX and notes we provide. Everything that makes a trip complicated — accommodation, luggage transfer, the shape of each day — is arranged for you before you arrive.
Can I walk the GR221 Experience without a guide?+
Yes — the GR221 Experience is a signed long-distance route and thousands of people walk it independently every year. What most walkers want help with isn't navigation, it's the 53 km of accommodation, the bag transfers, and getting the daily distances right. That's exactly what we take off your hands, while you still walk it under your own steam.
Who books the accommodation and moves my luggage?+
We do, both. We book walker-friendly B&Bs, inns and small hotels in your name at each overnight stop, with breakfast, and arrange door-to-door luggage transfer between them so you walk with a daypack. You'll get a full itinerary with every address, check-in detail and transfer time before you travel.
How many days do I need for a self-guided GR221 Experience?+
Most people take 2 – 4 days for the 53 km. Our planner lets you set your own pace and number of nights, so you can stretch the trip out with shorter days or compress it if you're used to back-to-back big days — the itinerary, accommodation stops and price all update as you change it.
