A week of high starts,
short days, and the
mountain trains between.
A gentler way into the Mont Blanc massif — mountain trains and cable cars do the hard climbing, so every day's walk begins high and stays largely at altitude, with a comfortable hotel bed waiting each evening.

Trip Essentials
The walk
Mont Blanc, without the back-to-back big days.
Not everyone wants seven days of five-to-eight-hour mountain stages. This trip covers much of the same ground around the Mont Blanc massif — the Chamonix valley, the balcony trails, the border ridge into Switzerland — but uses the region's historic rack railways and cable cars to reach each day's high point, leaving three to four hours of walking rather than a full mountain day.
You ride the Mont Blanc tramway to the Col de Voza, the cable car to the Plan de l'Aiguille, the Flégère lift into the Aiguilles Rouges, then cross into Switzerland by train to walk above the Emosson dam and through the villages of the Trient valley — Finhaut, Salvan, Les Marécottes. One night only is spent in a mountain refuge; the rest of the week you're back in a hotel bed with a hot shower.
It's a good fit for walkers who want the scenery and the sense of achievement of an Alpine week, without the long days or the overnight-bag-on-your-back commitment of the full Tour of Mont Blanc.
The route, day by day.
A fixed self-guided package: every stage, every night's accommodation and every luggage transfer is arranged before you set off.

Things walkers ask us.
Is it really self-guided? What if something goes wrong?
Yes — you walk without a guide, with a road book, maps and clear waymarking throughout. You'll also have a WhatsApp contact for the whole trip and 24/7 emergency support in case of weather changes, injury or a booking issue. Big Trail Adventures is your first point of contact from the moment you enquire.
How fit do I need to be?
Level 2 out of 4 — the gentlest of our Mont Blanc trips. Expect three to six hours of walking a day with 300 to 700 metres of ascent, on good paths, with the cable cars and trains doing much of the height gain for you. If you enjoy a solid day's walk in the hills, you'll be comfortable here.
Why is one night in a refuge without a hot shower?
Day 4 climbs to the remote La Loriaz refuge, which has no road access and limited facilities — one of the trip's quieter, more atmospheric nights. Everything else on the trip is hotel-based with proper showers.
Do I need to book the trains and cable cars myself?
Yes — reservations for the mountain trains and lifts used on the route (around £165 per person) are booked separately and aren't included in the trip price, since availability and timetables vary by season. We'll tell you exactly what to book and when.
When can I start?
The season runs mid-June to mid-September. Give us three or four preferred dates on the enquiry form and we'll come back with what's available.
Do you handle payments and refunds?
Yes. You book with Big Trail Adventures, pay us, and we handle the rest. Cancellation terms are set out in our booking conditions.
