Trip Essentials
The walk
Cowbells, chalets
and the great north faces.
This crossing runs from Adelboden to Grindelwald through the heart of the Bernese Oberland, and it packs in the full range of what makes these mountains special. It starts gently, among rounded, flower-strewn pastures and wooden chalets with carved balconies, then builds day by day towards the biggest names in the Alps — the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau.
You'll cross high passes, drop into quiet farming valleys, and climb through a landscape that still runs on cowbells and cheese cellars. Then, on the last two days, the pre-Alps give way completely: you walk beneath the glaciers and rock walls of the Oberland giants, finishing with a full day on the Eiger Trail, directly under the mountain's infamous north face.
Everything is booked before you set off — gîtes, mountain refuges and small hotels each night, half board throughout, and luggage transfer available for most of the route. You carry a daypack, follow a clear road book and IGN maps, and the rest is taken care of.
The route, day by day.
A fixed self-guided package: every stage, every night's accommodation and every luggage transfer is arranged before you set off.
- 01
Adelboden → Bunderschrinde → Kandersteg
6.25 h · +1150 m / −1200 m · 13 kmAn easy start through the rolling pastures above Adelboden, climbing gradually to a huge scree slope below the Bunderschrinde pass. From the col, a first big panorama opens over the Kandersteg valley and the high peaks beyond. A gentle descent through pasture and limestone cliff brings you down to Kandersteg. Night in a gîte.
- 02
Kandersteg → Kiental
6 h · +1350 m / −950 m · 11 kmFrom Mittholz, the route climbs through meadow and forest to the Alp de Giesenen, then steeply into a wide rock amphitheatre below the Zallers, Salz and Sattel peaks — sweeping faces and open pasture on every side. Over the col, the view opens onto the Kiental valley and Lake Thun far below. Night in a gîte at Ramslauenen.
- 03
Kiental → Bundalp
5 h · +750 m / −350 m · 12 kmA quieter day, following the unspoilt Kiental valley on small roads and lanes past traditional farmhouses. The route crosses Europe's steepest public road several times on the way up to Griesalp, before finishing at the magnificent high pasture of Bundalp. Night in a dormitory at the refuge.
- 04
Sefinafurgga → Mürren / Gimmelwald
7 h · +1150 m / −1350 m · 15 kmA proper high-mountain day. From the impressive Gamchi valley, meadow gives way to bare rock as the trail climbs to the Sefinafurgga pass (2,612 m), where glaciers and high peaks appear in full. The long descent finally reveals the Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch in their entirety, all the way down to Gimmelwald. Night in a gîte (no luggage transfer on this stage).
- 05
Stechelberg → Kleine Scheidegg → Alpiglen
7 h · +1350 m / −600 m · 17 kmA cable car down to Stechelberg starts the day, then a walk between the steep walls of the Lauterbrunnen valley past the spectacular Trümmelbach waterfalls. The path climbs to the Kleine Scheidegg pass at the foot of the Oberland giants and drops into the wide Grindelwald valley, finishing at the refuge in Alpiglen — about as close as you can get to the Eiger's north face. Night in a dormitory.
- 06
Eiger Trail → Grindelwald
5 h · +620 m / −1050 m · 12 kmThe final day runs along the balcony trail above Grindelwald known as the Eiger Trail, tracing the foot of the mountain's towering north face and the climbing routes that lead to its summit. A short descent brings you to the edge of the village, with an optional extension towards the glacial valley of the Oberer Grindelwaldgletscher before the last gentle stretch down through pasture into Grindelwald. Trip ends in the afternoon.

Things walkers ask us.
Is it really self-guided? What if something goes wrong?
Yes — you walk without a guide, using a road book and IGN maps. You'll also have a WhatsApp contact for the whole trip and 24/7 emergency support in case of weather changes, injury or a booking issue. Big Trail Adventures is your first point of contact from the moment you enquire.
How fit do I need to be?
Level 3 out of 4. Expect four to seven hours of walking a day with around 850 m of ascent on average, on well-marked mountain trails with some cable-secured sections. If you're used to full days in the hills at home, you'll be fine. Regular cardio in the months beforehand helps.
Can I book for one person?
Yes. Comfort rooms need two people minimum, but the classic version with dormitory nights and single-room upgrades are both available for solo walkers. Tell us on the enquiry form and we'll quote accordingly.
When can I start?
The season runs early July to early September, with departures possible Monday to Friday. Give us three or four preferred dates on the enquiry form and we'll come back with what's available.
Do you handle payments and refunds?
Yes. You book with Big Trail Adventures, pay us, and we handle the rest. Cancellation terms are set out in our booking conditions.
